A Deerfield Road homeowner near Pawtuckaway State Park had three massive glacial erratic boulders scattered across their backyard — remnants of the ice age that make this region geologically fascinating. Rather than the expense of removing these 5-10 ton boulders, they wanted to build the patio around them.

We designed a flowing patio that treats each erratic as a natural sculpture. The stamped concrete in weathered fieldstone wraps around each boulder with precision-formed edges that follow the stone's contour. We added LED uplighting beneath each erratic for dramatic evening effect and carved moss pockets where the concrete meets stone for natural colonization.
