Reviving a Suncook Village Commercial Courtyard

A Suncook Village business owner on Main Street wanted to transform the crumbling courtyard behind their historic brick building into an inviting public patio for their café. The space had 100 years of foundation remnants, drainage issues from the nearby Suncook River, and needed to match the village's 19th-century brick character.

We excavated the old foundations, installed a comprehensive drainage system that diverts river-valley groundwater, and poured a red brick-pattern patio with compass-rose center medallion. We integrated original bricks from the courtyard's demolished walls as accent borders and added cast-iron-style bollard lighting. The café now features 16 outdoor seats overlooking the Suncook River — the first outdoor dining in Suncook Village in over 50 years. Summer café revenue doubled in the first season.
